The New Jersey Devils (3-1-1) take the ice against the Washington Capitals (1-3-1) during Wednesday’s NHL slate, starting at 7:30 PM ET at Prudential Center and broadcast on TNT and Max. The Devils are sixth and the Capitals 16th in the Eastern Conference.
New Jersey secured a 5-2 road victory over the Montreal Canadiens in its last game on October 24. Washington played at home in its last game on October 24, and lost 4-1 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Auston Matthews scored his seventh goal of the season, Joseph Woll made 36 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs handed the Washington Capitals their fourth loss in five games, 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal this season and 823rd of his NHL career, moving 71 back of Wayne Gretzky’s record. Ovechkin, who would have tied a career-long season-opening goal drought if he hadn’t scored, had a game-high 14 shots, including a failed penalty shot.
“Fourteen shots? He shoots a lot,” Woll said. “Obviously he has a great shot. There’s a reason he’s scored so many goals. He was a dangerous player, especially in his little kitchen on the power play. I thought we did a good job.”
Woll denied Ovechkin on the penalty shot early in the second period, dropping the Capitals captain to 2 of 13 in his career. His 13 penalty shots are now tied for the most in NHL history with Vinny Lecavalier.
“I tried to make a move, and he save it,” Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin’s offensive contribution on the power play came too late, well after an early goal was disallowed because the league ruled he interfered with Woll and with the Capitals trailing 4-0. Darcy Kuemper allowed four goals on the first 12 shots he faced and 17 overall.
Washington’s only win so far came in a shootout last week at home against Calgary. This loss came against the team new coach Spencer Carbery spent the past two seasons with as an assistant.
“We’re just frustrated and I think we have so many good chances tonight and we just couldn’t score,” Ovechkin said. “It’s part of the process.”
Matthews’ goal was his first since back-to-back hat tricks to open the season. Morgan Rielly, John Tavares and William Nylander also scored for the Maple Leafs, who won for a fourth time in six games.
“You have to give them a lot of credit,” Carbery said. “They have a good team, and elite players make a few elite plays in given moments. Tavares’ goal, Nylander’s goal, Morgan Rielly’s goal, Auston’s goal — that’s the difference in the game.
Rielly’s goal was the first by a Maple Leafs defenseman this season and the fifth time the Capitals gave up the first goal of the game. Tavares and Nylander extended their respective season-opening point streaks to six and became the third set of Toronto teammates to do that.
An aging roster that seems caught between trying to extend its NHL contention window while Alex Ovechkin chases Wayne Gretzky’s record and a team that desperately needs a refresh, the Caps are off to a 1-3-1 start and have scored seven goals.
Washington has been one of the best teams in the NHL during the Salary Cap Era, but it became clear in 2022-23 that the Caps were spiraling. Nonetheless, it is pretty jarring to see a team that we associate with scoring goals for fun struggling to create any offense.
The New Jersey Devils have enjoyed a strong start to their season, boasting a record of 3-1-1 and accumulating a total of seven points. Their dynamic offense has been instrumental in their success, averaging an impressive 3.75 goals per game. A trio of offensive stars, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Erik Haula, have already combined for nine goals and 17 assists.
However, the supporting cast has not been far behind, with players like Tyler Toffoli, Timo Meier, Ondrej Palat and defensemen Dougie Hamilton and Jonas Seigenthaler contributing to open up the offense.
On the other side, the Washington Capitals have encountered a rough season, with a less-than-impressive 1-3-1 record and only three points. Their offensive struggles have been a key issue, averaging just 1.25 goals per game.
The trio of Matthew Phillips, Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome has managed to combine for three goals and five assists, but the remainder of the offense has found it challenging to find the back of the net. Only four skaters have contributed goals, leaving the Capitals vulnerable to opposing defenses that can capitalize on their offensive woes.
With this stark contrast in offensive performance, the matchup between the Devils and Capitals promises to be an intriguing one.
